LUX Insulation- Southern Alberta Spray Foam Experts
The benefits of Spray Foam Insulation have been tested and reported in a number of studies. Short term payback on investment, improved indoor air quality, and a high performing r-value are a few of key benefits of spray foam.
What are the different kinds of foam?
2lb Closed cell and Half lb Open Cell Spray foam are two types of foam that are used the most in residential and commercial construction. Besides these foams, it is also common to see pour foams used to fill voids in hollow metal spaces and cinder blocks. 3lb density foams are used to re-roof commercial buildings and low exothermic foams are used in underground applications like concrete lifting and soil stabilization.

2lb Closed Cell Spray Foam.
Lux Insulation has been using 2lb density spray foam to insulate residential, commercial and industrial buildings from Lloydminster to Edmonton Alberta and into Saskatchewan. Closed cell Spray Foam is a dense product. It has the ability to add structural stability to walls and roof systems. Vapour barrier code requirements are achieved with this type of foam in two inches of thickness or less.
Half lb Open Cell Spray Foam is light density polyurethane. It does not provide a vapour barrier and therefore must be covered with a vapour barrier that meets code. It is often used in difficult to reach areas as it has the ability to expand more than closed cell foam.
Where is spray foam used?
Where is spray foam insulation used?
Anyplace where insulation is required, spray foam is being used. Spray foam is used to insulate attic spaces, rim boards and cantilevers, main floor and basement walls, and is often sprayed on the ground before a basement floor is poured.
As metal buildings condensate easily they benefit immensely from spray foam insulation. Shops and Quonsets or even tool heated tool sheds are often the target of spray foam insulation. Metal service vans and construction trailers are insulated with closed cell Spray Foam to make them hold heat in more easily and to heat up faster in the winter.
Roof Foam & Coatings
Roofing Foam.
3lb density roofing foam is used as a re-roof solution for commercial flat roofs and low slope metal roofs to avoid having to tear off the old roof system. A spray foam roof system (SPFRS) can be applied over torch on, Tar & Gravel and metal roofs. The system involves cleaning the current roof well and then applying the dense foam to the roof. Afterwards a roof coating is used to cover the foam and guard it from UV exposure.
Roof Coatings.
There are a variety of roof coatings that can be applied to metal roofs, torch on roofs and fully adhered roof systems. These systems can extend the life of an older roof but must be applied before the roof becomes saturated and requires a complete remediation.
Once the foam is sprayed in place it can sometimes be difficult for a homeowner to visually know the difference. The touch test is the best way to know for sure. Pushing firmly on open cell Spray foam with your thumb or finger will penetrate the surface. Closed cell is too dense for this to happen.
During spraying it is normal for the foam to have a smell and no persons or animals should be inside the building at this time. After 24 hours there should not be a continual odour in the building.
Spray Foam must be covered with a thermal barrier or protection against fire. Drywall works for this application but sometimes it is not feasible. That is where intumescent coatings play a role.
