Well for a long time the building industry has toted around the term R-Value.

Spray Foam Insulation is not a new product. It is a polyurethane and people have been using polyurethanes in their homes, office and automobiles for a very long time. So what makes Spray Foam the right choice for your home or other construction project? Well for a long time the building industry has toted around the term R-Value. This word or term is just the measurement of how long it takes for temperature to penetrate a given material. Well within the last several years, Alberta building codes have begun to recognize that no rvalue is sufficient without a proper seal to keep air from infiltrating the building envelope. This is where closed cell spray foam insulation makes its mark in protecting buildings in Lloydminster and across Alberta.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SEAL

Closed cell polyurethane foam insulation has been widely televised for years and has gained popularity with many. People frequently point to the fact that Spray Foam has one of the highest rvalue ratings of all the building materials. Though this is a fact, the real measure of spray foam’s efficiency comes from it’s strength as an air and vapour barrier all in one. The idea that the r-value of a material is important when the building envelope is leaking air is a failed concept. Spray Foam’s expansion fills gaps and holes that would be left by batt & poly. Basically it doesn’t matter how high the r-value is if you can hold you hand of an electrical outlet and feel air. The building must be sealed.

Yes. According to CAN/ULC s705.2 which regulates spray foam installs, the building must exchange .3 air exchanges every hour for 24 hours before you can occupy the space. On job sites and commercial applications, no person(s) can be within 10m of in progress spray foam insulation.

Properly Installed Spray Foam is inert after installation. The spray foam industry in Canada is regulated both for installation and for manufacturing. No closed cell medium density spray foam can be manufactured under the CAN/ULC s705.1 standard if there are detectable VOC’s after 24 hours.

A vapour barrier is not needed over spray foam that is at least 2 inches thick.

Spray Foam insulation can cost between $2.75 and $10 per square foot or more depending on how thick it is applied and how much is being installed. An R20 is open areas may cost between $4.50 and $5.57 sqft.
